The HRC After School Program in conjunction with UNC students and Mary Scroggs Elementary School students in the Abbey court community now have a afterschool program that provides learning and growing activities for elementary aged children.
I absolutely love going to HRC to tutor the kids from Mary Scroggs elementary school. They are so fun to play with and I am even more amazed by their intelligence. They in fact motivate me to become a better student. Another college student and I were tutoring a 1st grader who was doing an assignment on addition and subtraction. The assignment contained numerous problems. The little girl asked her to time her while she did the problems! Talk about extreme motivation and discipline! ~Sherifat Ademola

I truly enjoy coming to the HRC for the after school program. The children are delightful and full of energy!!! I notice the variety of personalities whether they are semi-quiet or very outgoing. Looking forward to continue to come during the fall/spring semester!! ~Tamara Bazemore

HRC after school program is great. The kids are energetic and very friendly. I have been planning activities for the children on next week. We decided that we might do some of campus tour and gardening. We still have to do more planning for those activities but I'm sure it will be fun for the kids. ~Filbert Maynard

Today was my first day with the after school program and it was great! There weren't too many kids this time but that meant that each child received a lot of individual attention (which they enjoyed). From 3 to 4, some of the kids were doing homework while other were playing on the computers. Then we took them outside to play various activities ranging from jumping rope to just running around. The kids are adorable, bright, sooo sweet, and above all curious. I had no less than three different kids ask me "what that thing was on my head?" and "why do you wear it?" It made me realize that some kids aren't exposed to or don't live in very diverse areas. I was more than happy to answer them and that conversation led to what other languages I knew. So I entertained them for a little while with some urdu phrases which they thought were hilarious. We walked them back and they said they had fun! So I am definitely doing this again. ~Sofia Dard Open the document below to read other amazing stories from the HRC afterschool counselors!

Spring 2012 came early this year, and with that a jump start on the HRC's very own Community Garden. In March students of Judith Blau's, Social and Economic Justice class, coordinated with the Worker's Center, the After-School program and community volunteers to make this student organized effort blossom.

After just two months the garden was exploding with Swiss Chard, spinach, purple kohlrabi, herbs, spices, and lettuce of all types. It was a great harvest!! In conjunction with the HRC's foodshare program produce is redistributed to families around the community.
The Food Share program run at the HRC helps families receive adequate nutrition by connecting the farmers market suppliers as well as the now operational HRC Community Garden
