About the HRC

Formally established on 11 February 2009, shortly after receiving 501.C.3 certification, the activities of the Human Rights Center include giving ESL classes, assistance with government forms, soccer with neighborhood kids, informal get-togethers with our neighbors, and a Latino Festival at the Carrboro Commons (19 April).

The Human Rights Center has four core missions:

  • To promote inter-cultural understanding and peoples' full recognition of the dignity and fundamental rights of the others --- across the many lines that divide us; race, ethnicity, class, nationality, religion. These are our guiding principles at the Center, and we will begin to explore how we can encode them into our future programs in the larger community.
  • To be advocates for those who suffer exploitation and abuses of power and greed. Our neighbors in Abbey Court do, and we will not be silent.
  • To provide opportunities for college students in courses that highlight experiential learning. These include courses on human rights but also courses on immigration, poverty, inequality.
  • To work with other community organizations to combat poverty, racism, exclusion, abuse of workers and tenants, sexism, and homophobia in the broader communities of Chapel Hill and Carrboro.

Directions from UNC Campus

The CW and J buses will bring you to Abbey Court. If you are driving, take Franklin to Main Street that becomes Jones Ferry. Abbey Court is 501 Jones Ferry Road. After you enter, make a sharp right to follow a drive that is parallel to Jones Ferry. You will come to three big dumpsters and Building E is beyond that. The Center is on the second floor.
